lived here for a week and a half, and what happened at that time was gerald ford, who had served as vice president, became president when nixon resigned. it all happened very quickly. at the time the ford family was living in many alexandria, and they'd been living there for 20 years. it was going to take a while for them to be able to move into the white house. so for a week and a half in august 1974, the president of the united states would wake up in his home on crown view drive in alexandria, and he would go out and get the paper, greet his neighbors and the media that had gathered, and then he would be escorted to d.c. so he could go to work at the white house. and alexandria police officers were detailed to provide security near his home, on the street and also assist in traffic escorts while that was going on. when world war ii hit, a lot of men had to go serve in the war, and some officers went and served in the war, so pretty soon there was a need for women to start working in the department. and that's really when they hired their first secretary, the first women were civilians

reagan challenged the now new but old republican establishment headed by then- president ford, i was involved in that. i remember talking to the republican national committee, and a good friend of mine said, "there's not much i can do because we are going to have to roll over all of you. how do you think i got here? i came in with the goldwater people in 1964. what took you so long?" we have to accept the fact that when new people come in, they want a voice. the reagan people came in, and today, many of them are part of the party establishment. party establishments always eventually seem to act like the old ones. remember pat robinson -- when he ran for president, evangelicals began to stream into the party. ofwas said that a meeting robertson supporters resembled nothing so much as the bar scene in "star wars." they came anyway, and many of them today are part of the new old republican establishment.

. general motors sold more hybrid bugles than ever before. ford is selling some of the most fuel efficient cars. we are helping businesses succeed and we are creating good, middle-class jobs in america. so, we are making progress, but the only way to break this cycle of spiking gas prices is to shift our cars entirely off oil. that is why i called on congress to set up an energy security trust to fund research and the new technologies that will help us reach that goal. i would like to take credit for this idea because it is a good idea, but i cannot. basically my proposal builds up a proposal that was put forward by a nonpartisan coalition that includes retired generals and admirals and ceos. they came together around a simple idea -- much of our energy is drawn from lands and waters that we own together. but they proposed is to take some oil and gas revenue from public lands and put it toward research that will benefit the public. we can support american ingenuity without adding a dime to the deficit. we can support scientists that are designing new engines that are more energy efficient
